Whitman: Kitchen, Bathroom & Mudroom Renovation

Running a house with 2 working parents, five kids, and 2 cats and a dog pets can get very hectic and busy. So, when the O’brien’s in Whitman came to us looking to update their kitchen and down stairs bathroom efficiency was a big consideration.

When designing the kitchen, we talked a lot about maximizing the island area for family seating. One of the challenges that we needed to contend with was design intensive. Being a family of seven creating a good flow so that people could be in the kitchen area together but also out of the work space was important. Placement of two trash areas (a trash compactor and trash bin) and enough electrical so that items could be charged without being in the work space needed to be considered.

The owners decided to go with Schrock Entra cabinets, in Cherry  wood and Amber Suede finish because they could maximize the amount of cabinets within cabinet allowance.

In addition, Almar renovated a bathroom on the first floor to make it more functional and added an additional laundry closet in the kitchen area. We removed a non functioning tub and installed a new fiberglass shower.  With a laundry hook up already in the basement this additional set off the kitchen will allow the family to do twice as much laundry with interrupting the flow of the day.

The existing entry way from the exterior into the kitchen contained a hall way which we converted into a finished mudroom with a custom built in storage lockers and bench with cabinets above, draws below and hooks to hang coats and backpacks, keeping everything organized and out of the new kitchen space.

Also, the granite chosen for the counter top had a very prominent grain in it, and once of the sections did not flow well with the rest of the kitchen. Once we all saw it installed we knew we couldn’t have the aesthetically displeasing section stay so we work with the fabricator to have the section changed.

In the end the homeowner was delighted to have a larger, more functional kitchen with modern amenities including: a large island with in kitchen seating, 2 microwaves (including one draw microwave unit), 2 trash disposal units (both a trash bin and a trash compactor), additional laundry access on the first floor, a large mudroom with built in storage for all of the kids bags, boots, and coats.
