Transforming a Cape-Style Home for a Growing Family
Project Spotlight: Hanover Dormer Project
A Hanover homeowner needed to create more space for their growing family. With a new baby on the way, they wanted to avoid the hassle of having to go up and down the stairs to check on their children during the night.
The Solution: A Dormer Addition and Bedroom Split
To address this issue, Almar designed a dormer addition to the front of the house. This not only added extra space but also provided much-needed headroom in the existing bedrooms. By carefully splitting the long single bedroom, we were able to create two separate rooms, ensuring everyone could be on the same level.
Maximizing Space with Smart Design:
To minimize the loss of floor space in the new bedrooms, we incorporated barn doors on a track. This sliding door solution allowed us to save valuable space. Additionally, we reconfigured the existing radiators to their original locations, saving the homeowners money.
Creating Storage Solutions:
We made the most of the wasted space in the dormer knee walls by creating built-in bookshelves. These shelves not only provided storage but also concealed the television electronics. We also utilized the angled wall above the staircase to create additional storage.
A Smooth Schedule and Safety First:
The homeowners were upfront about their expected due date, which allowed us to plan the project accordingly. While meeting the aggressive schedule posed some challenges, we successfully completed most of the heavy framing and work before the baby arrived.
To ensure the safety of the little ones, the building department required the installation of hardwired smoke detectors throughout the house. Although this added time and cost to the project, it was well worth it for the peace of mind it provided.
The Result:
The homeowner now has a functional and comfortable space for their growing family. The dormer addition and bedroom split have created a more convenient and enjoyable living environment.
