Cedar Impressions Siding Renovations
The Almar team recently finished re-siding a home in Hyde Park with Cedar Impressions by Certainteed. The house, built in the early 1900s, had cedar shingles and clapboards and, in some spots, several layers. The homeowners were looking for a consistent look around the house with less maintenance.
Cedar Impressions was a good option for this home because they could still have the look of cedar shingles, with the lower maintenance option of vinyl, and still have the option to add character and unique touches. To achieve this, we installed scallop-shaped panels as three decorative belts on the gable peaks of the house.
Cedar Impressions shingles come in several different “sizes” and style options, including 5” and 7”. For this project, we went with Cedar Impressions® Triple 5″ Straight Edge Sawmill Shingles because the homeowner preferred the more traditional coastal New England look and then accented it with the scallops. Per Certainteed’s website, “Cedar Impressions® Triple 5″ Straight Edge Sawmill Shingles feature an authentic sawmill texture, with molded textures and patterns that replicate the effect of saw blades and splitting tools. They are available in 28 colors, including high-performance deluxe colors. And Cedar Impressions Triple 5″ mitered corner posts are now offset, blending corners harmoniously for a more accurate appearance.” [1]
One of the challenges of this project was that there were so many layers of old siding, and the amount and type of layers were inconsistent throughout the house. So, we solved this problem by stripping the old shingles off so that just the house’s sheathing was left.
Then we installed Typar House Wrap. And the new siding was installed over that. Around the window, we installed custom bent aluminum trim.
Now, the owners have a consistent, low-maintenance exterior with CertainTeed’s Lifetime Limited Warranty[2]
