Hanover: Finding a Contractor

It seems like there is a contractor on every corner, but when it comes time to find a professional many homeowners find that they have a difficult time finding someone who is a good fit. There are a number of different ways to find a contractor. You can find one by a referral from a friend, Angie’s List, YELP!, NARI and other networking sites and groups.

When looking for a contractor, you should always check their websites yourself, don’t solely rely on someone else’s word. And be cautious of scammers, there have been several scams on social media the last few years, where someone asks for a recommendation, then someone will post back “my boyfriend, husband, etc…can help you” and then come to find that the homeowner pays them money and they aren’t even a contractor.

Always interview 2-3 different contractors. You should never consider a proposal from a contractor you have not met or interviewed. You may receive a fair estimate from the first contractor interviewed, but you should get two additional estimates to help determine what’s best. Never judge the value of various proposals from the lowest bid received. A lower price could signal differences and shortcomings in the reliability of the contractor.  Make sure to ask for some references, true professionals generally include this in their information packet at the first meeting.

Your decision should be based on the completeness and professionalism of the proposal offered and presentation given. You should make sure that you understand the scope of work included in the written estimate. Be aware this may not match what you thought you told them. Make sure you are on the same page.

Other items to consider when choosing a contractor:

  1. The quality & completeness of the products recommended.
  2. The quality of the product choices offered.
  3. The completeness of the contractors’ insurance package.
  4. Communication between yourself and the contractor.
  5. Your own comfort level.
