What Are the Best Decking Materials for Your Home in Eastern Massachusetts?
An Almar Perspective
Building a deck is a fantastic way to extend your family’s living space and enjoy the outdoors, and here in Eastern Massachusetts, we know how to appreciate every bit of sunshine we get! But with our fluctuating temperatures, humidity, and those Nor’easters we all know and love (or hate!), choosing the right decking material is crucial. At Almar Building & Remodeling, we’ve seen it all, and we’re here to guide you through the options, helping you make an informed decision for your dream deck.
Natural Wood: Classic and Beautiful
(But High Maintenance – Especially Here)
Natural wood offers that classic, timeless aesthetic. However, let’s be honest, the freeze-thaw cycles and damp conditions here on the South Shore can be tough on wood. Here’s the Almar take on the popular choices:
- Pressure-Treated Lumber: It’s the most budget-friendly upfront. But AND this is a big but, in our climate, it needs serious attention. We’re talking staining or sealing every single year to fight rot and insect damage, which is a constant battle with our humidity and snow. If budget is your only concern, we can work with that but be prepared for the upkeep.
- Cedar & Redwood: These woods are naturally more resistant to rot and insects, and they smell fantastic! They’re definitely a step up from pressure treated. However, they still require regular maintenance (sealing every 2-3 years) to prevent weathering and cracking, especially with our winters. Cedar tends to be a bit better than Redwood in our area.
- Hardwoods (Ipe, Mahogany, etc.): These are the heavy hitters – incredibly durable and resistant to rot, insects, and even fire. They offer a luxurious look and can last for decades. They’re a great choice for our climate, but they come at a premium price. And even these superstars need regular oiling to prevent fading and cracking, particularly with the summer sun and winter snow.
Composite Decking: Low-Maintenance and Long-Lasting
(Our Recommendation for Many)
Composite decking materials, made from a blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, has become incredibly popular for a reason: low maintenance. And that’s a huge plus on the South Shore! Here’s why we often recommend it:
- Durability: Composite decking is a champ when it comes to resisting rot, insects, and fading – all critical in our climate. It also stands up to scratches and stains much better than natural wood.
- Low Maintenance: Say goodbye to staining and sealing! Occasional cleaning is usually all it takes. Think of all the weekends you’ll get back!
- Variety of Styles: You’re not limited on looks. Composite decking comes in a wide range of colors and styles, often beautifully mimicking the look of natural wood.
PVC Decking: The Ultimate in Low Maintenance
(If Your Budget Allows)
PVC decking, made entirely from plastic, is another fantastic low-maintenance option for Eastern Massachusetts.
- Ultra-Durable: PVC decking laughs in the face of moisture, rot, insects, and fading – all major concerns around here.
- Minimal Upkeep: Just like composite, PVC decking needs no staining or sealing.
- Long Lifespan: This stuff is built to last – decades, even with our weather.
- Cost: The trade-off for all this durability and low maintenance is cost. PVC decking is generally the most expensive option.

Choosing the Right Decking Materials for Your Home with Almar
The best deck material for your home depends on your budget, lifestyle, and how you envision using your deck. But here at Almar, we also put a big emphasis on long-term value and minimizing maintenance headaches. Consider these factors:
- Budget: Think beyond the initial cost. Factor in the ongoing maintenance expenses, especially for natural wood.
- Maintenance: How much time do you realistically have for upkeep? If you want to spend your time on your deck, not working on it, composite or PVC is the way to go.
- Aesthetics: What look are you after? We can help you find the perfect match, whether you love the warmth of wood or prefer a more modern vibe.
- Durability: In our climate, durability is key. We want your deck to look great and perform well for years to come.
